Liu Qiangdong, male, Han ethnicity, born on February 14, 1974, from Suqian, Jiangsu, with ancestral roots in Xiangtan, Hunan. Chairman of the Board of Directors of JD Group, graduated from Renmin University of China with a bachelor's degree, a member of the Civil Construction Association, and the Honorary Village Director of Pingshitou Village, Fuping County, Hebei Province.
On June 18, 1998, JD.com was founded in Zhongguancun as an agent for the sales of optical and magnetic products, and served as the general manager. In 2004, he first entered the field of e-commerce and founded "JD Multimedia Network" (the predecessor of JD.com), where he served as the CEO. JD.com has become the largest self operated e-commerce enterprise in China, and JD Group's business has involved retail, digital technology, logistics, health, insurance, logistics real estate, cloud computing AI and overseas fields. In May 2014, JD.com successfully went public on NASDAQ in the United States.
On April 6, 2020, Liu Qiangdong ranked 89th on Hurun Global Top 100 Entrepreneurs with a wealth of 95 billion yuan; On May 12th, Liu Qiangdong and his wife ranked 31st on the 2020 New Fortune 500 Rich List with a wealth of 58.42 billion yuan. On December 10th, Liu Qiangdong stepped down as the manager of Yichang Xudong Keyue Logistics Co., Ltd.
In 1974, Liu Qiangdong was born in Suqian, the poorest city in Jiangsu Province.
When I was young, my family was so poor that they only had sweet potatoes and corn for three meals a day for several years.
His parents are authentic farmers. In order to make a living, his father borrowed money from various places to buy a boat and drifted in the waves all year round, regardless of wind or rain.
Due to his parents frequently going abroad, he and his sister were fostered at his grandmother's house since childhood.
Liu Qiangdong, who is around 5 years old, shows his independent side. When his sister is hungry, he builds a stove with bricks to cook. He, who is a bit older, does everything such as cutting pig grass, picking manure, and bouncing cotton. I have developed an independent personality since childhood.
Before the fourth grade of elementary school, Liu Qiangdong could only eat pork once or twice a year. I occasionally eat it on weekdays, and then I eat it once during the Spring Festival.
Whenever during the Spring Festival, my grandmother goes to the town to buy pork and always requests the shopkeeper to give more fat so that we can make lard.
If you can't eat meat on weekdays, mix it with rice and lard. After finishing the meal, rinse a bowl of pork oil flower soup with hot water and drink until there are no more oil flowers.
Liu Qiangdong's favorite dish is braised pork, and the only one that can make him enjoy it is at the happy banquet in the village.
There is a wedding celebration in the village, and everyone goes to drink the wedding wine. However, each family brings one or two children, so there is usually not enough meat to eat. Often, the meat is snatched away before the plates are placed on the table. And Liu Qiangdong always couldn't grab the meat from the child, he could only eat the remaining oil on the plate.
My daily three meals are just corn and sweet potatoes. For example, Mantou and rice can only be eaten several times during the Spring Festival.
Liu Qiangdong once said that he had not eaten sweet potatoes for 15 years after leaving Suqian. Because I'm afraid of eating!
When Liu Qiangdong was a child, he not only had strong independence, but also was a top student in his class, always ranking first in the town.
As the only college student in the village, the whole village gathered 500 yuan and 76 eggs.
With the instructions of the whole village and the only supplies available, Liu Qiangdong boarded the train to Beijing. He knew that he had to survive independently from then on, and his family and village would never give him a penny again.
During his college years, Liu Qiangdong did indeed live independently and did not ask for a penny from his family.
Starting from his freshman year, he started various part-time jobs. When a teacher from Renmin University runs a training class, he also takes on the part-time job of copying envelopes. At that time, advertising was not as developed as before, and basically relied on targeted advertising by mail, while copying envelopes became a part-time job for Liu Qiangdong. At most, one can earn over a thousand yuan per month.
After his sophomore year, Liu Qiangdong helped his teacher sell books. This part-time job was considered a "good job". At that time, books were also easy to sell and there was no need to work overtime
I earn more than copying envelopes. A summer vacation can earn ten to twenty thousand yuan, which was a considerable amount in that era.
During his junior year, Liu Qiangdong took his part-time job to the next level. He used self-learning programming skills to help his hometown's power department develop an electricity management system and a catering management system for a fast food restaurant in Shenyang, which really helped him make a fortune.
Using this technology, Liu Qiangdong quickly bought a "big brother" mobile phone, as well as a "student phone".
After accumulating some funds, Liu Qiangdong began planning his own entrepreneurship.
In his senior year, he discovered that the restaurant near the school never lacked popularity, and every family's business was particularly prosperous. Sharp eyed Liu Qiangdong decided to open a restaurant.
He took out all his savings and borrowed a portion from relatives and friends, raising 200000 yuan to buy a restaurant near the school.
During his student years, Liu Qiangdong demonstrated a "people-oriented" business strategy. He paid restaurant employees twice as much as the industry, and even equipped each employee with a watch. In terms of food, he had to eat two meat and two vegetables a day, and was not allowed to eat leftover dishes from the restaurant. He could also drink alcohol on fixed days.
However, his conscience was seen as a "loophole". The purchaser purchased ingredients at low prices but issued high priced invoices to earn the price difference. The chef and the front desk cashier started dating, and the cashier did not count towards the bill. The two secretly included some of the money in their personal wallets.
After graduating from university, Liu Qiangdong entered a foreign company and started as a salesperson. He was promoted all the way to positions in logistics, information, management, etc. He worked from over 2000 yuan per month to over 4000 yuan per month, which was definitely a very high salary in the late 1990s.
Liu Qiangdong, who suffered from a failed entrepreneurship, originally wanted to live a stable life with a high salary for a few years. A sudden incident led Liu Qiangdong onto the path of entrepreneurship.
In 1998, Liu Qiangdong's family experienced a catastrophic accident when their livelihood boat sank to the bottom of the sea. Fortunately, their family did not have any accidents. At that time, my parents kept it a secret from Liu Qiangdong for a long time. Later, Liu Qiangdong learned about this and requested his parents not to run on the boat anymore. He would repay the money he owed.
From then on, the family's livelihood was cut off, and the debt owed became Liu Qiangdong's second heart wrenching thing!
Perhaps due to fate, Liu Qiangdong faced the debt owed by his family, which forced him to embark on the path of entrepreneurship again.
If it weren't for a family accident, Liu Qiangdong's entrepreneurial journey may have been delayed by a few years, and the times are changing rapidly. A few years later, the opportunities will be completely different, and perhaps it won't create today's JD.com. Or rather, it's another version of Liu Qiangdong!
In June 1998, unwilling to work, he rented a counter in Zhongguancun with his parents behind his back, bought a second-hand computer and a second-hand tricycle, and named it JD Multimedia. From then on, Liu Qiangdong embarked on JD's entrepreneurial journey.
"JD" is a part of the names of Gong Xiaojing and Liu Qiangdong, and Gong Xiaojing was Liu Qiangdong's first girlfriend.
At that time, Zhongguancun was the most famous wholesale and sales market for electronic products in the country. But here, it is also the most "black" market, where fake and counterfeit versions are difficult to distinguish between real and fake, and fights and fights often occur due to buying and selling.
Initially, Liu Qiangdong mainly sold video editing systems and hardware equipment for wedding photography studios.
From the first day of doing business, Liu Qiangdong demanded that he adhere to the principle of high cost performance service. Reasonable pricing and high-quality service. At the same time, refuse to negotiate. Persist in selling genuine products, issue formal invoices, and compensate ten for one fake product!
Due to his insistence on authentic, low-priced, and high-quality services, his storefront reputation has improved and his business has become increasingly prosperous. Later, he began to sell optical and magnetic products, recorders, videotapes, as well as computer products and repairs.
In order to increase sales and brand awareness, Liu Qiangdong has set up a delivery service specifically to deliver goods to other counters, and promised to deliver goods to his doorstep within 2 minutes. If the delivery time exceeds 2 minutes, he will be compensated with 10 yuan.
At that time, Liu Qiangdong had a service concept of logistics and distribution in his mind.
Due to his adherence to the service principle of creating a user experience and offering genuine products at low prices, Liu Qiangdong's customer base is increasing and his business is exceptionally hot.
Due to his large purchase volume, he has the capital to negotiate with upstream manufacturers, making him more competitive in terms of price.
In 2001, Liu Qiangdong had become the largest distributor of optical and magnetic products in China at that time, with more than ten distribution points nationwide. Liu Qiangdong's wealth has exceeded 10 million yuan.
With the funds, Liu Qiangdong's ambition became even greater. He rented an 18 square meter office on the 12th floor of the Peking University Resource Building. After more than a year of development, he bought the entire 12 floors, and at this time, Liu Qiangdong turned his attention to Gome, learning to build Gome's retail business model, and establishing JD brand chain stores.
Just as Liu Qiangdong was concentrating all his efforts to prepare for the national expansion strategy, the SARS outbreak in 2003 suddenly swept across the country. This epidemic without any warning caused Liu Qiangdong to shut down all the counters overnight. Business has reached a deadlock for a while!
The closure of a store is a taboo in the physical industry. Liu Qiangdong lost over 8 million in 21 days. 20 years ago, 8 million was such a terrifying number. The huge loss made Liu Qiangdong feel scared for the first time. He doesn't know when the SARS epidemic will pass. If this situation continues, the company will go bankrupt and close down after three months.
During that time, Liu Qiangdong often cooked for his brothers who were trapped together, and every day he discussed how to get through this difficult time.
At a discussion meeting, an employee said that in this situation, it is possible to try online sales.
So, Liu Qiangdong adopted the most traditional method of posting online, posting product information on forums, increasing promotion and group buying discounts, attaching contact information, allowing users to purchase and ship to them through logistics and express delivery.
Coincidentally, the moderator of this forum is an old user of JD.com, who said, "I haven't seen this company selling counterfeit goods in 5 years." It was only after the moderator's statement that someone bought JD's products on the forum.
Through this forum, Liu Qiangdong barely survived the "cold winter".
However, as the "cold winter" passed, his emotions encountered problems again.
Liu Qiangdong's girlfriend Gong Xiaojing, a family of three generations who have been in politics, does not want her daughter to work as a salesperson of CDs, nor does she have any interest in Liu Qiangdong, who was born into a poor family. She has been hindering and interfering with their love life. In desperation, Gong Xiaojing was forced to break up with Liu Qiangdong and left JD.com ever since.
A pandemic caused Liu Qiangdong to lose millions of yuan, and coupled with the departure of his first girlfriend, this is Liu Qiangdong's third heart wrenching incident.
When Liu Qiangdong found out the sales model of the Internet through this accident, it can be said that the SARS caused the successful transformation of JD.
Finding a better sales channel, all that remains is Liu Qiangdong's strengths, creating authentic value, reasonable pricing strategies, and improving user service experience. The laws of the three major railways of JD.com have enabled Liu Qiang to pursue success and expand his career.
In the era of the Internet "chasing the Central Plains", Liu Qiangdong has always adhered to his iron principle.
In 2004, Alibaba obtained a financing of 100 million yuan; When Dang.com successfully went public, Amazon also rushed forward with an unstoppable momentum.
However, Liu Qiangdong's plan to build his own logistics system and implement a one-stop sales and delivery service has been opposed by everyone. You should know that at that time, the big shots were all doing a "light asset" model. Liu Qiangdong undoubtedly went against the trend and built a physical operation model, which was a burning business. In that era when JD.com was still a "little brother", the risks were unimaginable!
After seeing the dividend of e-commerce, Liu Qiangdong gradually removed the physical counter and transformed the development of the Internet and JD logistics model.
In 2006, Liu Qiangdong gradually invested funds in the construction of warehousing and logistics and JD.com. But this kind of costly investment must rely on the support of the capital.
Quickly, Liu Qiangdong obtained his first $10 million financing.
Today's Capital Xu Xin is Liu Qiangdong's first Bo Le. She demands that Liu Qiangdong not realize profits in the coming years and focus on seizing the market.
But the domineering Liu Qiangdong directly made a promise, with sales of 80 million yuan in 2007, sales exceeding 350 million yuan in 2008, and sales reaching 1 billion yuan in 2009
In 2007, Liu Qiangdong did indeed exceed his target, but the financial crisis that followed in 2008 lowered JD's valuation from $150 million to $80 million.
Liu Qiangdong once again became fearful and forced himself to raise funds everywhere. He had to meet at least four or five investors a day, and at his craziest, he met 50 investors a week. I have almost run through the entire investment circle, but still have no results, and I see JD.com about to completely collapse. The supplier caused trouble and his brothers couldn't pay their wages. Liu Qiangdong, who was in his thirties, lost a tuft of white hair overnight and could only relieve his stress by drinking alcohol every day.
At this time, it was Xu Xin who extended a helping hand and found Hong Kong tycoon Liang Botao. This time, Liu Qiangdong completed a financing of 21 million US dollars.
After receiving this money, Liu Qiangdong's first task was to upgrade JD's logistics system, improve service technology and network construction.
Liu Qiangdong has once again come back to life, and this time Liu Qiangdong has begun to transform JD.com and gradually form effective competitiveness.
In 2010, Liu Qiangdong continued to expand and approached Zhang Lei, a senior at the National People's Congress, to raise $75 million in funding. Fully expand JD's warehousing and logistics.
Zhang Lei is the founder of Hillhouse Capital, who has invested in Tencent, Didi, NIO, and others. He is known as the Buffett of China and has a very unique investment vision!
Regarding Liu Qiangdong's ideas, Zhang Lei believes that 75 million US dollars is simply not feasible.
He demanded that Liu Qiangdong raise at least 300 million yuan, otherwise he would not invest. In Zhang Lei's view, Liu Qiangdong's proposal, like Amazon in the United States, JD.com can fully achieve a Chinese style Amazon, but the funding scale needs to reach 2.5 billion yuan.
Obviously, Liu Qiangdong was impressed by Zhang Lei's forward-looking vision, while also reminding him to build a Chinese style Amazon. The two hit it off at once!
Quickly, Zhang Lei invested in JD.com with a valuation of 1 billion US dollars, allowing JD.com to receive 2.65 US dollars, and later added an additional 50 million US dollars.
Due to the availability of funds, JD.com quickly formed a differentiated competition with Alibaba. JD's self built logistics are definitely heavy assets and very expensive, but without JD's logistics system, JD would not have persisted for long and would have been eliminated, at least not to the level it is today.
In 2012, the well-known "JD vs. Suning" battle on the internet allowed Liu Qiangdong to successfully link dealers and users to the JD platform. Although JD.com has been criticized as an "industry disruptor," this is a strategy that Liu Qiangdong has prepared for a long time. In order to promote JD's development, for users to buy genuine products, and for users to have a better service experience, being scolded a few times is nothing.
In the years of rapid development of the Internet, JD's advantages in self built logistics have been given full play, which has led to the rapid development of JD.
In 2014, JD.com partnered with Tencent to form a strategic partnership.
By leveraging Tencent's traffic advantage, more people have become aware of JD's service model and become JD's users. Since then, JD.com has embarked on a comprehensive expansion and development.
In May 2014, JD.com successfully went public in the United States with a market value exceeding 30 billion US dollars. Liu Qiangdong has become a true leader in e-commerce.
In 2017, the fourth Wuzhen Internet Conference, a group of Internet BOSS gathered in Wuzhen, which can be called the most expensive meal in the world.
Among these entrepreneurs who have created Internet giants, the only difference is that JD has no partners, only Liu Qiangdong.
Tencent has five founders, Ali has 18 Arhat, Baidu has seven swordsmen, Xiaomi has seven joint ventures, Meituan has at least Wang Huiwen.
Only Jingdong, Liu Qiangdong created Jingdong with his own efforts. Steel nerves dominate the board of directors. He is a terrible figure who does not need partners. He may exist in this traditional industry, but is extremely rare in Internet companies.
